Brazilian E-Commerce Analysis

Brazilian E-Commerce Performance: A Data-Driven Insight

This Power BI dashboard was built to unravel the complexities of the Brazilian e-commerce market. By transforming raw, multi-source data into clear, actionable visual insights, it helps stakeholders understand key trends, spot growth opportunities, and refine operational strategies within this dynamic sector. The project offers a comprehensive analysis of sales, customer behavior, and logistics efficiency from 2016 to 2018.

Project Overview & Problem Statement

The main goal of this project was to gain a clear, data-driven understanding of the Brazilian e-commerce landscape. I aimed to address several key challenges:

  • Identifying Growth Trajectories: Understanding how the e-commerce market expanded year over year.
  • Assessing Customer Satisfaction: Quantifying and visualizing customer feedback to highlight service strengths and areas needing improvement.
  • Optimizing Logistics: Analyzing delivery performance to pinpoint bottlenecks and improve efficiency.
  • Uncovering Market Hotspots: Pinpointing the geographical areas with the highest e-commerce activity.
  • Tracking Financial Performance: Monitoring payment trends and the total value of transactions.

Data Source

My analysis uses the Brazilian Olist E-Commerce Public Dataset, which is freely available on Kaggle. This extensive dataset covers orders, customers, sellers, products, payments, reviews, and geolocation information from September 2016 to October 2018.

Methodology

  1. Data Acquisition & Understanding: I started by sourcing and thoroughly understanding the various tables within the Olist dataset, including customers, orders, order items, products, sellers, payments, reviews, and geolocation data.
  2. Data Cleaning & Transformation:
    • I handled missing values and inconsistencies across the tables.
    • Where necessary, I converted data types, especially for date columns.
    • I identified and removed any duplicate entries to ensure the data was accurate and reliable.
  3. Data Modeling (Star Schema Design):
    • I created a robust data model in Power BI, establishing clear relationships between all relevant tables (e.g., connecting orders to customers, sellers, and order details).
    • I designed a star schema, centralizing core facts like orders and linking them to dimension tables such as customers, sellers, products, and time.
  4. DAX Calculations: I developed powerful Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) to create key metrics for my analysis:
    • Calculated Total Orders, Total Customers, Total Sellers, and Total Payments Value.
    • Derived percentages for review scores and insights into customer demographics.
    • Implemented measures to analyze order growth rates and the efficiency of deliveries.
  5. Interactive Dashboard Design: I designed an intuitive and visually appealing Power BI dashboard featuring:
    • KPI cards for quick performance monitoring at a glance.
    • Line charts to visualize trends over time for orders, payments, and delivery status.
    • Bar charts to compare performance across different categories like review scores and top cities.
    • Donut charts for clear proportional breakdowns, such as review score distribution.
    • Interactive filters and slicers that allow users to perform dynamic, deep-dive analysis.

Key Findings & Insights

Market & Customer Overview
  • Total Sellers: My analysis included data from 3,095 unique sellers, showcasing a diverse and active vendor landscape.
  • Total Orders Processed: I analyzed a substantial 96,475 transactions, providing a rich foundation for my insights.
  • Total Unique Customers: Insights were drawn from the engagement of 96,096 distinct customers, highlighting broad market participation.
  • Total Payments Value: The platform generated over $16.01 Million (BRL) in total transaction value, underscoring significant market activity and financial flow.
Growth and Operational Efficiency
  • Exponential Order Growth: The dashboard clearly shows a dramatic increase in total orders, climbing from minimal activity in 2016 to a strong 51,000 orders in 2018. This trend powerfully demonstrates the rapid expansion of e-commerce in Brazil.
    • 2016: Early market phase with low order volume.
    • 2017: A significant leap to 39,000 orders.
    • 2018: Continued strong growth, reaching 51,000 orders.
  • Delivery Performance: While early deliveries consistently grew with order volume, late deliveries also increased. This points to logistics as a key area for ongoing optimization to keep customer satisfaction high as the market scales.
Customer Satisfaction Analysis
  • Predominantly Positive Feedback: The distribution of review scores strongly indicates high customer satisfaction. Score 5 reviews (57,328 reviews / 57.73%) formed the vast majority, reflecting excellent service quality.
    • Score 4: Also very strong, making up 19.29% (19,141 reviews).
    • Score 1: Representing 11.5% (11,424 reviews), this segment identifies specific areas where focused attention could significantly improve the customer experience.
  • "Silent" Satisfaction: My analysis revealed that a large number of high ratings (37K Score 5 reviews and 13K Score 4 reviews) came from customers who didn't leave a written message. This suggests that the user experience is intuitive and satisfying even without explicit feedback.
Geographic Market Performance
  • São Paulo Dominance: São Paulo clearly stands out as the main hub for Brazilian e-commerce, leading significantly in both total orders (around 16K) and total customers (around 15K). This highlights its crucial role as a primary market.
  • Key Urban Markets: Following São Paulo, major cities like Rio de Janeiro (around 7K orders/customers), Belo Horizonte (around 3K orders/customers), and Brasilia (around 2K orders/customers) are identified as important drivers of e-commerce activity. (Note: A category labeled 'Blank' accounting for ~3K orders/customers suggests an opportunity to enrich the data with more complete geographical information.)
Financial Performance Trends
  • Surging Payment Value: The total payment value directly mirrors the overall market growth, showing healthy and expanding financial flow within the e-commerce sector throughout the analyzed period.
    • 2016: The initial phase, reflecting minimal payment value.
    • 2017: Strong growth, reaching $4.1 Million in payments.
    • 2018: Continued acceleration, with payments growing to $8.9 Million.

Project Impact & Value Proposition

This project showcases my ability to transform complex raw data into clear, actionable strategic insights. This dashboard provides valuable tools for businesses to:

  • Monitor Market Trajectory: Accurately track and anticipate e-commerce growth patterns.
  • Enhance Customer Experience: Pinpoint specific areas for service refinement based on detailed review analysis.
  • Optimize Operations: Strategically improve logistics and delivery efficiency by understanding trends in early versus late deliveries.
  • Drive Targeted Growth: Precisely identify and focus resources on high-potential geographic markets.
  • Inform Business Decisions: Build a clear, data-driven foundation for effective marketing campaigns, product development, and strategic expansion.
